ASA

What is ASA?

ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is an improved petroleum-based engineering thermoplastic derived from ABS, copolymerized from three monomers: acrylonitrile, styrene, and acrylate.

It inherits the toughness of ABS while offering exceptional weather resistance and UV resistance. It withstands prolonged outdoor exposure without aging, discoloration, or embrittlement — making it a high-performance 3D printing filament engineered specifically for outdoor applications, balancing strength, durability, and outdoor stability.

  • Three-monomer synergy: Acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance and rigidity; styrene delivers processability and gloss; acrylate replaces butadiene to achieve UV resistance
  • Heat deflection temperature of 96.4°C: Higher than most general-purpose filaments, suitable for everyday high-temperature outdoor scenarios
  • High surface gloss: Printed parts feature a refined appearance with excellent post-processing capabilities for painting and electroplating
  • Strong chemical stability: Resistant to weak acids, weak alkalis, common cleaners, and oil stains

Why ASA for 3D Printing?

  1. Excellent mechanical properties: Balanced rigidity and toughness, impact-resistant, wear-resistant, with strength comparable to ABS — ideal for medium-to-high load-bearing parts
  2. Superior outdoor weather resistance: UV and aging resistance outperforms ABS; no yellowing, embrittlement, or performance degradation even after prolonged outdoor exposure
  3. Outstanding heat resistance: Heat deflection temperature of 96.4°C (per ASA TDS), higher than most general-purpose filaments, suitable for high-temperature outdoor environments
  4. Excellent surface finish: High gloss, refined appearance, with great results for painting and electroplating
  5. Strong chemical stability: Resistant to weak acids, weak alkalis, common cleaners, and oil stains — suitable for complex outdoor environments

Pros and Cons of ASA

Pros

Exceptional Weather & UV Resistance

No aging, discoloration, or embrittlement during prolonged outdoor use — the top choice for outdoor printing

Rigid & Durable

Impact-resistant, flex-resistant, and wear-resistant with mechanical properties close to ABS — ideal for functional parts

Heat Stable

Withstands temperatures up to 96.4°C without deformation in everyday high-temperature environments

Premium Surface Finish

High gloss, refined appearance, excellent post-processing results

Chemical Resistance

Resistant to weak acids, alkalis, oil, and common cleaning agents — suitable for complex working conditions

Dimensional Stability

Low molding shrinkage rate delivers high-precision prints with minimal warping

Cons

Feature Description Impact
Demanding print conditions Requires 250-280°C extrusion temperature, 90-110°C heated bed, and enclosed chamber to prevent warping High equipment barrier; not suitable for entry-level printers
Moisture-sensitive Prone to bubbling and reduced interlayer adhesion when exposed to moisture Requires sealed dry storage; pre-drying recommended before printing
Limited solvent resistance Not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and other strong organic solvents Suitability must be evaluated for special chemical environments
Mild printing odor Releases small amounts of irritating fumes at high temperatures Ventilation or air purification recommended
Slightly higher cost More expensive than standard ABS Less cost-effective; best suited for applications requiring weather resistance
Note The drawbacks of ASA are primarily related to printing conditions and cost. Its outdoor weather resistance is irreplaceable among engineering plastics, making it ideal for applications with clear outdoor stability requirements.

Base Material Comparison

Compared with: ABS, PETG

Dimension ASA ABS PETG
Weather / UV Resistance Excellent — no aging or discoloration during prolonged outdoor use Fair — yellowing and embrittlement after prolonged sun exposure Poor — UV accelerates aging
Mechanical Strength High rigidity, high impact resistance, close to ABS High rigidity, high impact resistance Moderate — good toughness but lower strength
Chemical Stability Resistant to weak acids, alkalis, oil, and cleaners Resistant to weak acids and alkalis, but poor weather resistance Resistant to some chemicals, but weak outdoor weather resistance
Print Difficulty High (enclosed chamber + high-temp heated bed required) High (enclosed chamber + high-temp heated bed required) Low (easy to print, beginner-friendly)
Price Higher Moderate Lower
Key Advantages Summary
  • Weather Resistance ChampionBuilding on ABS's mechanical, molding, and post-processing advantages, ASA offers far superior UV and outdoor weather resistance compared to both ABS and PETG — no yellowing, embrittlement, or performance degradation during prolonged outdoor use
  • Unique PositioningOutdoor structural components, automotive exterior trim, garden products, and outdoor equipment housings — the dedicated engineering material for outdoor working conditions
  • Chemical ResistanceOutperforms both ABS and PETG in resistance to weak acids, alkalis, oil, and common cleaning agents — suitable for complex outdoor working conditions

ASA Printing Tips

Warning ASA printing conditions are similar to ABS — a high-temperature heated bed and enclosed chamber are required. Small amounts of irritating fumes may be released at high temperatures. Always print in a well-ventilated environment.
Enclosed Chamber with Adhesive ASA is prone to warping. Use an enclosed printer and apply adhesive (such as glue stick or 3D printing-specific adhesive) on the heated bed to enhance first-layer adhesion.
Increase Chamber Temperature in Cold Weather When ambient temperature is low, preheat the print chamber in advance to prevent edge warping and interlayer cracking.
Parameter Recommended Notes
Extrusion Temperature 250 - 280°C Fine-tune based on specific brand and model
Heated Bed Temperature 90 - 110°C High-temp bed used with adhesive
Chamber Temperature ≥ 40°C (recommended) Enclosed printer; preheat when ambient is cold
Cooling Fan Off or very low Avoid interlayer cracking
Print Speed 30 - 60 mm/s Reduce speed for complex models
Dry Storage Sealed dry storage Pre-dry at 80°C for 4-6 hours before printing
