PA

What is PA (Polyamide)?

PA (Polyamide), commonly known as Nylon, is a polymer featuring repeating amide linkages (–CO–NH–). It offers low density, high thermal stability, excellent wear resistance, a favorable friction coefficient, and outstanding temperature resistance along with impact strength.

Polyamide plastics are typically designated with numbers such as PA6, PA66, PA12, and PA46. These numbers refer to the molecular structure of the PA polymer, with each structure delivering different performance characteristics. Depending on the type, PA has a melting point ranging from 220°C to 260°C.

  • Multiple molecular structures: PA6, PA66, PA12, PA46 — different numbers correspond to different molecular chain lengths and performance profiles
  • Highly modifiable: By adding additives such as glass fiber or carbon fiber, strength and stiffness of specific grades can be significantly enhanced on demand
  • Melting range of 220-260°C: A high-temperature engineering plastic with a relatively wide processing temperature window
  • Self-lubricating: Inherent lubricity with a low friction coefficient and outstanding wear resistance

Why PA for 3D Printing?

01Excellent mechanical properties

High strength, high toughness, impact-resistant, fatigue-resistant — capable of bearing medium loads, suitable for various functional load-bearing parts

02Wear-resistant with low friction

Inherent lubricity with outstanding wear resistance, ideal for gears, bearings, and sliding components prone to wear

03Heat and oil resistant

Heat deflection temperature of 99.6°C (per PA TDS), resistant to engine oil, fuel, and various solvents — suitable for industrial and automotive oily environments

04Highly modifiable

Easily compounded with glass fiber, carbon fiber, lubricants, and other additives to enhance strength, stiffness, or wear resistance on demand

05Broad industrial applicability

Engineering-grade performance for fixtures, mechanical parts, industrial prototypes, and other professional applications

06Toughness for dynamic parts

Flex-resistant, not prone to brittle fracture — suitable for moving parts subject to repeated motion

Pros and Cons of PA

Pros

Balanced Strength & Toughness

High strength and toughness, impact-resistant, fatigue-resistant — stable and reliable under medium loads

Wear-Resistant & Low Friction

Inherent lubricity with excellent wear resistance — ideal for gears, bearings, and other wear-prone components

Oil & Chemical Resistant

Resistant to engine oil, fuel, and common solvents — suitable for oily and industrial chemical environments

Heat Stable

Long-term heat resistance of 99.6°C, withstanding even higher temperatures in short bursts

Cons

Feature Description Impact
Extremely moisture-sensitive Absorbs moisture from air easily; strength and dimensional stability degrade when damp Strict pre-drying required before printing
Demanding print conditions Extrusion 250-290°C, heated bed 70-90°C, drying 70°C/>12h, enclosed chamber required High equipment barrier; not for entry-level printers
Higher cost More expensive than PLA and ABS; reinforced grades cost even more Best suited for industrial applications with clear performance requirements
Moderate weather resistance Not UV-resistant; prone to aging and discoloration during prolonged outdoor exposure Not suitable for long-term outdoor use
Weak acid/base resistance Not resistant to concentrated acids or strong alkalis Not suitable for highly corrosive environments
Note The drawbacks of PA are primarily related to moisture sensitivity and demanding print conditions. Its core advantages of self-lubricating wear resistance and oil/chemical resistance hold an irreplaceable position among engineering plastics, especially for dynamic wear-resistant functional parts.

PA-Derived Materials by eSUN

From PA to PA-CF to PA6-CF, eSUN continuously strengthens its modification capabilities, providing more professional material solutions for industrial-grade applications.

PA (Standard Nylon)

eSUN's standard polyamide filament delivers the core properties of nylon: high strength, high toughness, self-lubricating wear resistance, and oil/chemical resistance — suitable for general engineering applications such as gears, bearings, and fixtures.

PA-CF (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Nylon)

Carbon fiber-reinforced PA that significantly enhances strength and stiffness while maintaining low-friction wear resistance. Ideal for industrial functional parts requiring higher strength and rigidity.

Typical Applications A US customer uses PA-CF to customize automotive parts; a UAE customer uses PA-CF to customize drone components.

PA6-CF

A carbon fiber-reinforced version based on PA6 substrate, further optimizing mechanical properties and processing characteristics for high-end industrial applications.

PA12+CF (PA12 Carbon Fiber Reinforced)

A carbon fiber-reinforced version based on PA12 substrate. PA12 offers lower moisture absorption and better dimensional stability, making it suitable for applications requiring higher precision.

Industry Applications

Industry Typical Applications
Industrial Manufacturing Gears, bearings, bushings, fixtures and jigs, wear-resistant sliders, mechanical connectors
Automotive Engine peripheral parts, fuel system components, interior structural parts, door wear parts
Electronics & Electrical Insulating brackets, electrical housings, wear-resistant buttons

Base Material Comparison

Compared with: ABS, PPS

Dimension PA ABS PPS
Self-Lubrication & Wear Resistance Inherent self-lubrication, low friction coefficient, best wear resistance Moderate wear resistance High hardness but high friction, no self-lubrication
Oil & Fatigue Resistance Extremely resistant to engine oil, fuel, and various oils; withstands hundreds of thousands of bending cycles Moderate oil resistance Fatigue resistance inferior to PA
Toughness & Processability Impact toughness far exceeds PPS; wider processing temperature window than PPS Good toughness, easy to process Clearly brittle; highest processing temperature requirements
Print Difficulty High (drying + enclosed chamber + high-temp extrusion required) High (enclosed chamber + high-temp heated bed required) Very high (highest processing temperature requirements)
Weather Resistance Moderate; not UV-resistant Moderate; yellowing and embrittlement after prolonged sun exposure Good
Key Advantages Summary
  • Self-Lubricating Wear Resistance Champion: Inherent self-lubrication with low friction coefficient and outstanding wear resistance; oil, fuel, and grease resistance ranks among the best of general engineering plastics
  • Fatigue Resistance Champion: Withstands hundreds of thousands of repeated bending cycles; fatigue resistance outperforms both ABS and PPS — ideal for dynamic moving parts
  • Unique Positioning: Gears, bearings, bushings, sliding friction parts, automotive fuel system components, and other dynamic wear-resistant functional parts

PA Printing Tips

Warning: Pre-Drying Required PA is extremely moisture-sensitive. Before printing, dry the filament at 70°C for more than 12 hours to achieve optimal print results. It is recommended to use the eSUN eBOX filament box to prevent re-absorption of moisture during printing.
Warning: Enclosed Chamber Printing PA has a relatively high shrinkage rate. Maintain temperature during printing by using an enclosed chamber printer to prevent warping and interlayer cracking.
