Toughening Technology

Technology Type: Polymer Toughening Technology

Advanced Toughening Technology for High-Performance PLA 3D Printing

PLA offers excellent printability and stiffness, but inherent brittleness limits its functional use. eSUN's toughening technology introduces energy absorption and crack-growth inhibition mechanisms into the polymer matrix, significantly enhancing toughness and impact resistance while retaining strength and stiffness.

03-04 | Core Microstructure Mechanisms

1. Elastic-Phase Toughening ("Sea-Island" Structure)

Highly elastic phases (e.g., EVA, POE, SBS, SEBS) are dispersed as fine particles throughout the matrix. The resulting "Sea-Island" morphology absorbs and dissipates impact energy upon stress.

PLA Matrix + Toughening Agent → Fine Dispersion → Sea-Island Structure → Enhanced Absorption

2. Crack Pinning & Shear Band Formation

Microcracks encountering rubber particles or fillers undergo deflection or pinning. Dispersed phases induce localized crazing and shear bands, dissipating deformation energy and preventing major cracks.

Crack Initiation → Toughening Phase Interaction → Deflection / Pinning → Suppression

05 | Toughening Agent System

Elastomer Agents

POE · EVA · SBS · SEBS

Forms an elastic dispersed phase within the PLA matrix, absorbing impact energy via controlled deformation.

Core-Shell Agents

MBS (Hard-Shell / Soft-Core)

Soft core provides energy absorption while the hard shell enhances interfacial bonding with the PLA matrix.

Rigid-Particle Agents

Nano-SiO₂ · Nano-CaCO₃

Induces localized crazing and shear-band formation without relying solely on elastomeric phases.

06-07 | Manufacturing Process & Performance Balance

Step 01

Melt Blending

Twin-screw high-shear mixing ensures uniform dispersion, controlled particle size, and stable sea-island morphology.

PLA Resin + Agent → Twin-Screw Mixing → Uniform Dispersion
Step 02

Compatibilization

Maleic-anhydride-grafted polymers reduce interfacial tension and enhance adhesion for efficient stress transfer.

Improved Interfacial Bonding → Efficient Stress Transfer

Optimized Toughness–Strength Balance

eSUN balances agent type, addition ratio, particle size distribution, and compatibilizers to achieve maximum toughness while retaining PLA's original stiffness, tensile strength, and printing stability.
