PEBA

What is PEBA?

PEBA (Polyether Block Amide) is a high-performance thermoplastic elastomer featuring high tensile strength, excellent elastic recovery, high low-temperature impact resistance, and outstanding low-temperature performance, widely applicable to 3D printing.

This material combines the characteristics of polyether and polyamide chemical structures, exhibiting unique physical and mechanical properties. The core concept of PEBA lies in its molecular structure where flexible polyether segments and rigid polyamide segments alternate to form a block copolymer. This special molecular design endows PEBA with excellent flexibility, wear resistance, and impact resistance while maintaining a certain degree of strength and resilience.

Block Copolymer Structure

Flexible polyether segments and rigid polyamide segments alternate, combining elasticity and strength.

High Tensile Strength

Excellent mechanical properties, capable of withstanding large tensile loads without breaking.

Excellent Elastic Recovery

Rapid rebound after deformation, with energy return rate up to 70%.

Outstanding Low-Temperature Performance

Maintains good elasticity and impact resistance even in sub-zero environments.

Why Choose PEBA for 3D Printing?

PEBA delivers high-precision printing results, suitable for manufacturing parts or products requiring high elasticity, high strength, and flexibility.

01Medical Field

Can be used to produce customized prosthetics, orthotics, and other medical devices.

02Industrial Field

Can be used to manufacture wear-resistant gears, seals, and pipe connectors.

03Consumer Goods

Often used to make sports shoe soles, airless basketballs, and other products requiring elasticity, flexibility, and durability.

04Chemical Corrosion Resistance

Good tolerance to grease, lubricating oil, various organic solvents, and fuel.

05Good Temperature Resistance

Maintains stable performance across a wide temperature range.

Pros and Cons of PEBA

Pros

Outstanding Rebound Performance

Energy return rate up to 70%, rapid rebound after deformation — ideal for high-performance cushioning structures and sports components.

Ultra-Lightweight

A lightweight engineering elastomer with density 15-20% lower than conventional TPU, delivering significant weight reduction.

Excellent Low-Temperature Performance

Maintains good elasticity and impact resistance in sub-zero environments without hardening or brittle fracture.

Fatigue-Resistant & Long Service Life

Withstands repeated bending and cyclic loads; long-term reciprocating use without significant performance degradation.

Good Chemical Resistance

Good tolerance to grease, lubricating oil, various organic solvents, and fuel.

Cons

Feature Description Impact
High procurement cost Significantly more expensive than mainstream materials such as TPU, EVA, and PLA Currently mainly used in high-end, professional-grade product scenarios
High processing threshold Both traditional molding and 3D printing require precise control of temperature, speed, and environment; improper cooling control easily leads to shrinkage and warping High requirements for equipment and operational experience
Raw material not UV-resistant Raw PEBA gradually ages and degrades under prolonged sunlight exposure Must add UV stabilizers for outdoor applications
Note The drawbacks of PEBA are primarily related to cost and processing threshold. Its rebound performance, lightweight characteristics, low-temperature elasticity, and fatigue resistance hold irreplaceable advantages among elastomer materials, especially suitable for high-end sports cushioning and professional shock absorption applications.

PEBA Printing Tips

Warning: Pre-Drying Required It is recommended to re-dry the filament after receipt. After the filament has been exposed to air for some time after opening, re-drying is recommended to improve print quality (60°C for 8h or 70°C for 5h).
Warning: Use a New Hotend A new hotend is recommended. Do not use a hotend that has previously printed fiber-reinforced filament to print PEBA, as residual fibers may affect print quality.
Warning: Check Extruder Condition Ensure the extruder is free of foreign objects and the feed gears are not worn, otherwise filament slippage may occur preventing continuous and uniform extrusion.
Note: Low-Resistance Feeding Printing flexible filament requires smooth low-resistance feeding. Excessive feeding resistance will cause under-extrusion. It is recommended to use a spool dry box with bearings or install a low-resistance spool holder with bearings.
Note: Bed Temperature Adjustment For hollow ball-like models, the bed temperature can be appropriately lowered (40-45°C); for solid or sheet-like models, the bed temperature can be appropriately increased (60-80°C), or glue can be applied to reduce warping or detachment from the bed.
Parameter Recommended Notes
Drying Temperature / Time 60°C / 8h or 70°C / 5h Re-drying recommended after opening
Hotend Condition New hotend Avoid using hotends that printed fiber-reinforced filament
Extruder Check No foreign objects, gears not worn Prevent filament slippage
Feeding System Smooth low-resistance feeding Recommended: spool dry box with bearings or low-resistance holder
Bed Temperature (Hollow Models) 40 - 45°C For hollow structures like tennis balls
Bed Temperature (Solid/Sheet) 60 - 80°C Can be used with adhesive to reduce warping
Cooling Control Precise control Improper cooling easily leads to shrinkage and warping
