Essential Printing Tips for FDM Beginners

FDM 3D printing is incredibly rewarding, but beginners often run into a few common pitfalls. Keeping these 5 crucial precautions in mind before hitting "Print" will drastically improve your success rate and print quality.

1

Level the Build Plate Before You Start

An unlevel print bed is the primary cause of poor first-layer adhesion (prints not sticking) or slanted, warped models. While many modern 3D printers come equipped with an auto-leveling feature, it is still crucial to ensure the foundational mechanical leveling is correct.

Pro Tip: Always stay and observe the first layer as it prints to visually confirm that the filament is adhering properly and evenly to the bed.
2

Set the Correct Nozzle and Bed Temperatures

Do not adjust temperatures blindly. Incorrect temperature settings can easily lead to a weak bond with the build plate, severe stringing, or even a completely clogged nozzle.

Pro Tip: It is highly recommended to use the official recommended printing parameters provided by the filament manufacturer as your baseline.
3

Check Model Orientation and Base Contact

Don’t just hit print immediately after downloading a model! You must carefully review the layer preview in your slicing software to ensure the model has a stable and flat contact area with the build plate. If necessary, manually add support structures or enable bed adhesion assistants like a Brim or a Raft.

4

Optimize Cooling Fan Settings

When printing with materials that require rapid cooling, such as PLA or flexible TPU, turning up the part-cooling fan speed helps solidify the extruded plastic instantly. This significantly improves the print quality of difficult sections like overhangs and bridges.

5

Never Skip the "Preheat and Extrude" Step

Some printers allow you to skip straight to "Start Print". However, printing without properly preheating the nozzle can result in a delayed filament flow, causing the printer to extrude nothing for the first few seconds (leading to a failed first layer or stringing).

Pro Tip: Manually preheat the nozzle first → wait for the temperature to stabilize → extrude a small amount of filament → only start the print when you see a smooth and consistent flow.
