PP

What is PP?

PP (Polypropylene) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic that is lightweight, with a density of approximately 1.05 g/cm³, making it one of the lightest materials available. Unlike other engineering plastics, PP combines excellent chemical resistance, high-temperature resistance, and fatigue resistance. It is known as the "hundred-fold plastic" for its outstanding performance under stress and repeated bending.

In 3D printing applications, PP is ideal for producing durable parts subject to frequent stress or repeated bending, food-grade containers, chemical accessories, and medical rehabilitation devices. It is the perfect material for thin-walled bending parts, snaps, and food container prototypes.

Lightweight

Density of approximately 1.05 g/cm³, one of the lightest engineering plastics, ideal for manufacturing lightweight products.

Eco-friendly & Safe

Non-toxic, odorless, and recyclable, meeting food-grade safety requirements.

Low Absorption & Heat Resistant

Almost zero water absorption with good thermal stability, the lowest water absorption rate among the ten base materials.

Corrosion Resistant

Excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and oils, suitable for chemical and medical applications.

Pros and Cons of PP

Pros

Durability

Excellent impact resistance, does not easily break under bending and tension.

Chemical Resistance

Extremely resistant to a variety of chemicals.

Food-grade Safe

Non-toxic, food-grade material, safe for food contact.

Lightweight

Low density (<1 g/cm³), ideal material for manufacturing lightweight products.

Heat Resistance

Good heat resistance, suitable for high-temperature applications.

Electrical Insulation

Excellent electrical insulating material, suitable for electronic applications.

Semi-transparent & Smooth Surface

Printed products have a semi-transparent and smooth surface with excellent appearance.

Cons

Characteristic Description Impact
Poor UV Resistance Oxidizes and deforms when exposed to UV light for extended periods Not suitable for long-term outdoor use
High Printing Difficulty High shrinkage, prone to warping or deformation, poor adhesion to print bed High printing and debugging threshold, requires special adhesive
Printing Directionality (Anisotropy) Weak interlayer bonds, prone to delamination along layer lines under impact Load-bearing parts require attention to print orientation
Moisture Absorption & Storage Requirements Requires sealed storage or drying before printing Strict storage conditions required

Material Comparison

Benchmark materials: PLA, PETG

Comparison Dimension PP PLA PETG
Bending Fatigue Resistance Withstands hundreds of thousands of bending cycles without breaking, far exceeding PLA and PETG Brittle, prone to fracture Decent toughness, but inferior fatigue resistance compared to PP
Overall Cost Raw material price lower than PLA and PETG, lowest cost Moderate raw material price Moderate raw material price
Water Absorption Rate Lowest among the ten base materials, almost zero absorption Low absorption rate Medium absorption rate
Chemical Resistance Excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and oils Limited chemical resistance Good chemical resistance
Core Advantages Lowest water absorption rate among the ten base materials, outstanding repeated bending fatigue resistance, lowest raw material cost; combines food-grade safety with excellent chemical resistance, making it the ideal choice for thin-walled bending parts and snap applications.
Unique Positioning Thin-walled bending parts, snaps, food container prototypes, high-volume turnover parts — irreplaceable advantages in scenarios requiring repeated bending, lightweight, and chemical corrosion resistance.

PP Printing Tips

Warning PP material has high shrinkage, prone to warping or deformation, and poor adhesion to the print bed. It is recommended to use PP-specific adhesive and pay attention to slicing settings and printing environment to reduce warping risk.
Parameter / Operation Recommended Value Notes
Z-seam Alignment Enable Enable Z-seam alignment and start point alignment
Z-axis Lift Disable Disable Z-axis lift function to avoid affecting print quality
Printer Type Non-enclosed printer Recommended to print PP material in a non-enclosed printer
Cooling Fan Large fan for accelerated cooling Use a large fan to accelerate cooling for better forming
Print Bed Treatment Apply PP-specific adhesive Apply PP-specific adhesive for printing to reduce warping
