Basic Workflow of Resin 3D Printing

Unlike FDM technology, Resin 3D printing (SLA/DLP/LCD) uses liquid photopolymer resin to achieve incredible details. To ensure a high success rate and a safe working environment, it requires a distinct workflow from file preparation to post-processing.

1. Software & Slicing

Before printing, the 3D model must be converted into a sliced file that the printer can read.

  • Model Inspection: Ensure the 3D model is a closed, solid manifold without any broken surfaces or holes.
  • Orientation & Supports:
    - Tilt Angle: It is highly recommended to tilt the model (usually 30°~45°) to reduce the peel force during layer separation.
    - Add Supports: Any overhangs must be properly supported, or the print will fail.
  • Parameter Settings: Adjust the bottom exposure time (usually longer to ensure bed adhesion) and normal layer exposure time based on the characteristics of the specific resin you are using.
  • Export File: Save the sliced file in the specific format supported by your printer (e.g., .ctb, .stl).

2. On-Machine Printing

  • Check the Vat: Ensure the FEP/PFA release film at the bottom of the resin vat is clean, intact, and free of any cured resin residues.
  • Prepare the Resin: Shake the resin bottle well, then slowly pour it into the vat. Be careful not to exceed the maximum fill line marked on the vat.
  • Build Plate Leveling: If the printer hasn't been used for a while or has been moved, re-level the Z-axis to ensure the build plate is perfectly parallel to the LCD screen.
  • Start Printing: Insert your USB drive or send the file via the network, select the file, and hit start.

3. Post-Processing

Step Key Operation Purpose
Removal Gently use a metal scraper to lift the model off the build platform. Prevents forceful removal that could damage the bottom of the model.
Washing Submerge the model in Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or a dedicated cleaning solution. (An ultrasonic cleaner is recommended). *Water-washable resins can be washed with water. Removes sticky, uncured resin from the surface and restores fine details.
Remove Supports It is recommended to remove supports before post-curing (the model is softer at this stage). Prevents deep pitting and improves overall surface smoothness.
Post-Curing Place the washed and fully dried model into a UV curing station for 2 to 10 minutes. Significantly enhances the material's hardness, strength, and stability.

4. Maintenance & Cleaning

  • Recycle Resin: If you don't plan to print again soon, filter the remaining resin in the vat (using a paper strainer) and pour it back into the bottle.
  • Clean the Vat: Gently wipe the release film with alcohol wipes. Never use hard or sharp tools to scrape it.
  • Screen Protection: Always check if any resin has dripped onto the LCD screen and clean it immediately to prevent it from curing on the screen.

5. Safety Precautions

  • Personal Protection: You must wear nitrile gloves and a mask throughout the entire process. Liquid resin is a skin irritant and emits volatile odors.
  • Ventilation: Always place the printer and perform washing/curing in a well-ventilated environment.
  • Waste Disposal: Any tissues, alcohol wipes, or failed prints contaminated with liquid resin must be fully cured under UV light or sunlight before being disposed of in the regular trash.
